Respirators with the right safety class (FFP) protect against dust, smoke and sometimes viruses and bacteria. As a purchase aid: The test winner mask from Stiftung Warentest as well as current offers for face masks.
Whether in construction work, painting or welding or in the processing of wood and metal: dust and smoke can hardly be avoided in various activities as a craftsman. A health hazard can be minimized with a face mask if the right model with the appropriate safety class is used. An inappropriate model does not adequately deter dust particles, hazardous substances or viruses and bacteria. Pollutants can then penetrate into the alveoli (alveoli) and cause damage to health there.
Which respiratory protection safety class (FFP) is suitable for which area of application, how to wear it correctly and what else is important when buying: At the VATER you will find a compact overview of it.
Tip: Only certified and tested masks such as the test winner mask from Stiftung Warentest (02/2021) offer the greatest possible safety: FFP2 respirator 9320+ from 3M . How to distinguish high-quality masks from inferior models can be read here in the FAQs of the German employers’ liability insurance association for Face mask trade and goods logistics. Checklist for mouth and nose masks
- The European standard EN149:2001 defines the safety requirements for particle-filtering half masks, which must protect against solid fine dusts (aluminium dust and smoke, glass fibre, wood dust, etc.) and liquid aerosols, but not against steam and gas.
- Since October 1, 2020, all newly marketed masks must be properly CE-approved, such as this FFP2 mask from 3M or this FFP3 mask. How to recognize tested and high-quality masks, you can read here at the German employers’ liability insurance association trade and goods logistics.
- The half-masks cover the nose and mouth and should fit as close as possible and close – even a coarser beard growth can impair the filter function.
- Especially during strenuous work, a model with valves that facilitate exhalation should be selected.
- It is divided into three FFP classes (“filtering face piece”), which filter a different number of particles (up to 0.6 μm) and pollutant concentrations from the air depending on the total leakage and filter.
- FFP1 protective masks filter at least 80% of the particles in the air (up to the size of 0.6 μm), the total leakage in such models is a maximum of 25%. Suitable for protection against non-toxic and non-fibrogenic dusts, thus used in construction or the food industry.
- FFP2 protective masks filter at least 94% of airborne particles up to 0.6 μm in size, total leakage is a maximum of 11%. Protect against solid and liquid harmful dusts, smoke and aerosols, are thus used, for example, in mining or in the metal industry. - FFP3 protective masks provide the greatest possible protection and filter at least 99% of particles up to a size of 0.6 μm from the air. Total leakage maximum 5%. FFP3 models protect against toxic, carcinogenic and radioactive particles, are also recommended for protection against viruses and bacteria, and are also used in the chemical industry.
- Reusable respirators: According to the standard, the following markings apply to the reusability of filtering half masks: R = reusable. NR = maximum usable for one layer. Please note the information on how long a protective mask can be used. Over time, the material that prevents inhalation of the activated carbon disintegrates.
Tip: To protect against viruses and bacteria, respirators with FFP class 3 are the best choice. Recommended respirators
What products are recommended by fathers? The following selection takes into account five quality criteria: testimonials, reviews, number of purchases, test marks & seals of approval. FFP1 Respirators
At least 80% of the particles (up to size 0.6 μm) are filtered out of the air in protection class FFP1 (also marked as “P1”). They are suitable for filtering non-toxic dusts and are also used in construction or the food industry. If the mask should also protect against gases, please select models with appropriate marking (e.g. “A1”) FFP2 respirators
FFP2 masks (often labeled “P2”) filter at least 94% of airborne particles. The total leakage is a maximum of 11% when used correctly (close fitting). This protection class is suitable for solid and liquid harmful dusts, smoke and aerosols – and is therefore used, for example, in the metal industry. If the mask should also protect against gases, please select models with appropriate marking (e.g. “A2”). The test winner FFP2 mask at Stiftung Warentest 02/2021: FFP2 respirator 9320+ by 3M
