InformFace mask ation on respirators against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2
(Status: 18.01.2022) Types of respirators
Against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 different types of respirators come into question.
Loose-fitting mouth-nose masks prevent people from contaminating their environment with exhaled droplets. The wearer itself is thus only protected to a limited extent, because the mask does not offer sufficient protection against aerosols (finest airborne droplets). Since mouth-nose masks do not fit tightly, it is easy to breathe.
Tight-fitting FFP masks reliably protect the wearer from viruses. These respirators filter even the smallest particles and aerosols from the air. Masks with exhalation valve offer greater wearing comfort. Respirators without an exhalation valve additionally prevent the mask wearer from contaminating his environment with exhaled droplets. FFP masks are available in different levels of protection. Further information can be found here.
Moldex manufactures FFP masks, but not mouth-nose masks.
We cannot make any statement about the effect of self-sewn masks made of fabric, so-called community masks, as this depends on various factors such as the fabrics used.
The most important information about FFP2 masks and FFP3 masks explained simply: mask types, protection levels, exhalation valve, etc.
To the infographicProtection levels
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), “in the direct care of patients with confirmed or probable COVID-19 […] at least FFP2 masks are worn in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations”. Further information of the RKI can be found here (external link).
The rule of the German Social Accident Insurance for the use of respiratory protection DGUV 112-190 provides for FFP3 masks for handling viruses. This rule applies to normal workplace situations. Reuse
DGUV Rule 112-190 stipulates that when handling airborne biological agents such as the coronavirus, reusable respirators may only be used once or for a maximum of one work shift, regardless of the manufacturer.
In private use, e.g. when shopping or on public transport, a low pathogen load can be expected under certain circumstances. Münster University of Applied Sciences and the University of Münster have examined methods to reduce the risk of infection when FFP2 masks are used multiple times in private use. Further information on the project funded by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) can be found here (ePaper, external link). Proper use
In order for an FFP mask to develop its full protective effect, it must be used according to the enclosed instructions for use. Among other things, it is important to pay attention to the correct fit of the mask on the face and the course of the banding. Short explanatory films about Moldex FFP masks can be found on the YouTube channel of MoldexEurope (external link).
Both FFP masks and mouth-nose masks are an important part of personal protective equipment to protect against coronaviruses. The use of respiratory protection does not replace other important measures such as hand hygiene or keeping distance, but complements them. FFP2 and FFP3 respirators against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 are particularly important for people who are in direct contact with (potentially) infected people as medical personnel or helpers or who belong to risk groups.
