The art of touch
This tranquility. No running back and forth around you, no music. Simply this attention. Undivided. And hands that respect people in their limits and yet touch them deeply. A pipe dream? No. A cosmetic treatment with a Dr. Hauschka natural beautician.
Your hands, two brushes and Dr. Hauschka products. That’s all the Dr. Hauschka natural beautician needs. Well, of course also water, compresses and towels. But then the table next to the treatment table is almost complete. And the dialogue between beautician and customers, women and men, can begin: sometimes in conversation, sometimes only with the hands, which breathe rhythmically and sense the needs of the customers. Sometimes with the lymphatic stimulation brushes.
Of course, the Dr. Hauschka esthetician follows a precise treatment process that all Dr. Hauschka estheticians worldwide carry out identically. This is ensured by regular further training. For example, every appointment with her begins with a foot bath. Of course, this also includes deep cleansing and facial care with masks, packs and ampoules from Dr. Hauschka as well as detailed care advice: for men and women alike.
What makes Dr. Hauschka treatments so unique is the rhythm of touch, immersion and letting go, the rhythmic alternation between rest and movement, warmth and coolness. A game with polarities that you will find in our medicinal plant garden and in the preparation of medicinal plants for our Dr. Hauschka products and our WALA medicines.
The heart of every Dr. Hauschka treatment is also carried by the rhythm of movement: lymph stimulation with brushes. The wafer-thin lymphatic capillaries are important for the removal of metabolic products and excess tissue fluid. The gentle strokes and brushstrokes of the Dr. Hauschka esthetician stimulate them, relax and decongest them. The tissue is activated for self-cleaning and purifies, oxygen and nutrients reach the cells faster again.
How do we know all this? Elisabeth Sigmund, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Cosmetics, developed this holistic cosmetic treatment in Stockholm in the 1950s. She combined medical and cosmetic knowledge and learned manual lymphatic drainage from Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid: the basis of Dr. Hauschka lymphatic stimulation.
In 1971, Elisabeth Sigmund trained the first beautician in her method. Today, around 1900 Dr. Hauschka natural beauticians work in around 25 countries and offer facial treatments as well as body treatments and make-up.
Incidentally, many Dr. Hauschka beauticians are convinced that they have the most beautiful profession in the world. Understandable, right? Interview
Interview with Dr. Hauschka esthetician Manuela Schöbel on the art of touch
Ms Schöbel, Dr. Hauschka treatments were developed many decades ago. Are they still up to date? Or do you need to adapt them to modern life?
Manuela Schöbel: Our classic Dr. Hauschka treatment is treatment more modern than ever. It is unique because everything is handmade. We do not use machines or devices. We work with our hands and brushes in lymphatic stimulation. We achieve such great effectiveness with our hands that we don’t need needles or machines, UV light or anything like that. We achieve this effectiveness through the peculiarity that we do not knead, do not wring, do not press or manipulate, but through our breathing hands.
Breathing hands? Can you explain that in more detail?
Touch has a rhythm like breath. Through how we touch people, we treat them with respect and distance. And this is noticeable on the skin. We do not touch the human being, his skin, manipulatively, but bring him and the skin processes back into vibration through breathing, repeatedly releasing movements. It is a triad of immersion, condensing and dissolving again. It is just like breathing, coming and going. This resonating touch makes our Dr. Hauschka treatments unique. It is not the will of the beautician in the foreground, but the person with his needs, who is treated.
It sounds very unusual that you touch the customers during the cosmetic treatment, but still do not get too close, but rather develop a feeling of respect and yet deeply touch. How do you do that?
The inner attitude of the Dr. Hauschka natural beautician, but also how she turns physically, is decisive for the result. Nobody wants to be manipulated too much. The customer lies on the treatment table and reveals himself. Parts of the body are not clothed. As a result, there is already an intimacy. In this situation, we maintain a certain spatial distance. We are careful not to sit on the couch with a buttock, for example. Instead, we always stand well with ourselves, with a straight back and an attitude with which we stay with ourselves inside. The attention nevertheless creates closeness, but a respectful one. From this attitude, we touch very carefully. We dive in, but take back again. As a result, I have the encounter, but I also release myself and release.
A special feature of Dr. Hauschka treatments is that they start with a foot bath. Why is that? After all, it’s all about facial care.
It was Elisabeth Sigmund’s idea to place a foot bath at the beginning of the treatments. She did this because her customers so often came with cold feet. If there are inflammatory areas or redness on the face, then the entire facial treatment is much less effective if the feet are not warm and the heat is still in the head area instead. And with a hot water bottle you don’t get your feet as warm as with the foot bath. And then, in two ways, the foot bath is a very intimate moment that I share with a customer. She’s sitting there, her feet in the footbath, I’m at eye level. We no longer have the situation later when the guest is lying down and the practitioner is sitting or standing behind the couch at the head end. By the way, the feet are also something very intimate. For teenagers, for example, it’s incredibly hard to embrace the foot bath. If I do a special treatment for impure, inflammatory skin for young people, then they would prefer to lie on the couch with their sneakers. Even if they come belly-free or with a deep insight into their décolleté. Taking off your shoes means a big overcoming. But the nice thing is: When the customers have overcome themselves, they always dip their feet into the water with a sigh from deep inside. Because the foot bath is not just wellness and well-being, the customers feel this relief in the head area. After the foot bath, we kneel in front of the customer and dry the feet very carefully without rubbing.

The Dr. Hauschka treatment also includes a facial steam bath. This is also known from other cosmetic treatments. At Dr. Hauschka, however, it also has a special feature.
