On the product pages you will find the corresponding documents linked. What is the difference between a surgical mask and an FFP mask?
The medical mouth-nose protection, also called surgical mask or surgical mask, is a medical device of class 1 of Regulation (EU) 2017/425. Depending on the type, this has a bacterial filter performance of 95% to 98%. The medical mouth-nose mask is primarily used for external protection, i.e. the wearer of the mask is only slightly protected himself.
FFP masks are considered personal protective equipment of category 3 according to Regulation (EU) 2016/426. By definition, they are designed to protect the health and life of the wearer. FFP1 masks only provide protection against coarse particles such as dust. Therefore, the Robert Koch Institute currently recommends at least one FFP2 mask as an active protective measure. What is the difference between an FFP2 and an FFP3 mask?
FFP2 respirators have a filter performance of 95%. FFP3 respirators have a filter performance of even 99%. How do you recognize certified, tested protective masks?
Here you will find a detailed article on the question of what to look for when buying protective masks. In short, the CE mark must be affixed to the product (in the case of surgical masks on the packaging) and the standard on which the mask is based must be mentioned. For surgical masks, this is DIN EN 14683. For FFP2 and FFP3 masks it is DIN EN 149:2001 + A1:2009. The FFP masks must also be followed by a four-digit code number after the CE mark. What is the difference between masks with and without valve?
Both FFP2 and FFP3 masks are available with and without valve. An exhalation valve is intended to reduce the breathing resistance during exhalation and thus facilitate exhalation. As a result, however, the environment is no longer reliably protected. The use of FFP2 or FFP3 with valve should therefore be done wisely. How long can a FFP2 or FFP3 mask be worn and can it be washed?
FFP respirators cannot be washed. The filter layers would be damaged and the filter performance would be impaired. Whether a respirator can be reused according to the manufacturer is indicated by the marking “R” (reusable). However, most FFP masks are designed for single use (“NR” – non reusable) with a wearing time of about eight hours. However, this information refers to occupational health and safety, i.e. activities in which contact with pollutants definitely takes place.
In the course of the resource-saving use of respirators, the Robert Koch Institute has also made recommendations under which FFP2 and FFP3 masks can be reused. Thereto:
- Always put on and take off the mask with washed/disinfected hands
- If possible, do not touch the inside of the mask
- ventilate in a separate place
- replace if the mask has become damp/wet
Are there FFP2 or FFP3 masks for children to buy?
No, FFP masks are used for occupational safety as described. That’s why there are basically no models specifically for children. Depending on the age, it must be tried whether the respirator fits. What is the difference to KN95 masks or a corona pandemic respirator (CPA)?
KN95 masks are subject to Chinese guidelines, which
not fully comparable with EU standards for personal
Protective equipment are. In the absence of a type examination, these are
not CE certified and therefore not marketable. KN95 masks are therefore very unsafe, opaque products and by no means comparable with certified FFP2 or even FFP3 masks.
In order to combat the shortage of protective masks, the
Infection Protection Act enacts the “Medical Supply Assurance Ordinance” (MedBVSV). This grants
products without valid type examination and CE certificate market access,
after they have passed a simplified test procedure. This corona
Pandemic Respirators or CPA masks are only marketable as long Face mask as
the pandemic status applies. A similar level of protection is provided for these masks.
, but they do not replace a full-fledged FFP2 or FFP3 mask.
At Satiata Med, you will therefore only receive fully certified, guideline-compliant protective masks.
