The term “botulinum toxin” refers to various similar neurotoxic proteins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In science, a distinction is made between botulinum toxin type A to type G.

Botulinum toxin belongs to the group of muscle relaxants. It inhibits the release of acetylcholine, which is needed to trigger muscle contraction. By restricting or even preventing the impulse transmission from nerve to muscle, there is a partial or complete inhibition of the muscles.

Most people are familiar with botulinum toxin A primarily from aesthetic medicine under the name “Botox®”. However, botulinum toxin type A and type B have been used in various areas of medicine since the early 1980s.

Initially, botulinum toxin therapy was used in neurology against movement disorders. Meanwhile, it is also used to treat migraines, depression and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) as well as the treatment of various tremors (involuntary muscle twitching) and cramps. Due to its relaxing effect on the muscles, the muscle relaxant has also found its way into aesthetic medicine in recent decades and is used there to tighten wrinkles.

The active substance is broken down by the body and therefore has only a temporary effect. How long this lasts varies from person to person and depends on where the botulinum toxin A was injected and how quickly the body breaks down the muscle relaxant. Botulinum toxin (Botox®) for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is referred to as an excessive production of sweat, which occurs regardless of outside temperature, physical exertion or treatment season. In some people, it occurs only on certain parts of the body, others suffer from excessive sweating all over the body. In addition to radiofrequency microneedling, botulinum toxin injection (Botox® injection) can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis. The muscle relaxant is injected into the affected regions to block the nerve impulses that control sweat production. Botulinum toxin (Botox®) for wrinkle smoothing

Botulinum toxin treatment (Botox® treatment) can be used to smooth the type of wrinkles caused by recurrent muscle movements. For this purpose, the smallest weakly concentrated amounts of botulinum toxin (Botox®) are injected into the muscles to be treated. The muscle pull is thereby specifically inhibited, which results in a smoothing of the skin area.

The product is mainly used for the treatment of mimic wrinkles on the face (e.g. frown lines, mouth wrinkles), in the neck and décolleté area. The following types of wrinkles/problem areas can be treated with the muscle relaxant, among others:

  • Frown lines / grittular folds
  • Thinker’s forehead/worry lines
  • Drooping eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet/laugh lines
  • Puppet wrinkles/mentolabial folds
  • Bunny Lines/Nose Folds
  • Pleats
  • Strawberry chin/cobblestone chin/chin pleats
  • Turkey’s neck/platysm wrinkles

Furthermore, the so-called Gummy Smile can also be treated. This term refers to the circumstance when the gums become visible when laughing due to too much muscle pull.

However, the use of the muscle relaxant does not make sense for every desire for wrinkle smoothing. Therefore, a comprehensive consultation should always take place in advance in order to find the right anti-aging treatment for the individual needs of the patient. Contraindications for an injection with botulinum toxin (Botox®)

Even if an injection with botulinum toxin (Botox®) rarely entails risks and side effects when used properly, there are reasons why treatment should be avoided. The treating person should inform you comprehensively about this in the first consultation. Inform your doctor in advance about your medical history and the medications you are taking so that he/she can advise you in the best possible way.

Contraindications include, in particular:

  • Pregnancy and lactation: During pregnancy and lactation, any medically irrelevant procedure should be avoided.
  • Inflammation in the treatment area: If there is inflammation in the area to be treated, it should first heal completely.
  • Diseases: If there is a disease with associated muscle weakness such as myasthenia gravis, treatment should be avoided.
  • Taking medication: No injection should take place while taking certain antibiotics (aminoglycoside antibiotics) or immediately afterwards. Also, medicines containing acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) should not be taken before treatment.
